English Language Institute Course Information:
Bridge Course: Levels 7-8

ELI 776 College Success (Required)

This advanced-level, two-session course gives students practice in listening and understanding academic lectures and in practicing the strategies needed to understand material from college textbooks. Students practice note-taking, summarizing, synthesizing, and test-taking. College-level topics such as Anthropology, Physical Science, Business and History will be studied.

ELI 778 Issues in American Culture (Elective)

This content-based, advanced level course is designed to build cross-cultural awareness through reading and discussion of topics in American culture and to improve students' reading and vocabulary comprehension, increase listening and speaking skills while helping them develop the ability to formulate and express their opinions.

ELI 780 American Novel (Elective)

This course is designed to help advanced students gain an appreciation for American literature by reading, analyzing and discussing two American novels with a similar theme. Class discussions will serve as a basis for journal, summary and essay writing. Vocabulary enrichment is also a vital part of the course.

ELI 785 Advanced Academic Writing I (Required)
In this advanced level, two-session course, advanced students will examine a series of issues in contemporary American life and respond to it in a written composition. This involves background reading about the issue, reading an essay expressing a contrary point of view, and looking at a real case study involving the issue. Group and individual exercises help students clarify a point of view, acquire new vocabulary, and practice grammatical structures in preparation for writing persuasive and argumentative essays.

ELI 792 Oral Proficiency (Required)
This advanced course is designed to give students the opportunity to improve spoken English in academic situations. Students will learn strategies to handle complicated situations with comprehensible communication, give appropriate responses to a given situation, and to express opinions and knowledge using circumlocution and fine shades of meaning. Students will be introduced to conversational English including greetings, negotiations, and requesting and are expected to participate actively in class.

ELI 797 Advanced Grammar I (Elective)
This course is designed to provide students in the Bridge Course with an advanced and comprehensive study of English grammar. Students will not only learn and produce the grammar structures in written format, but also in real, communicative situations. Major emphasis is placed on mastering the use of modals, count and non-count nouns, and conditionals. Focus is also placed on vocabulary building and pronunciation practice.

ELI 850 College Vocabulary and American Idioms (Elective)
In this course, advanced students will enhance their vocabulary as they prepare for the university. Comprehension exercises and activities will vary and include idioms on a variety of topics.

ELI 876 College Success II (Required)
This Bridge Course class is designed to continue to prepare students for academic work at the university level. As in Part One, students must demonstrate their ability to comprehend college lectures and texts used by native speaking students, take efficient notes, and apply the concepts from the lectures and readings to written and oral work.As the course progresses, less and less support is provided by the instructor as learning becomes the responsibility of the student. Students participate in group and individual projects as well as visits to university classes.

ELI 884 Intercultural Communication (Elective)
This advanced-level, content-based course provides an introduction to communication between people from different cultures. The course focuses on the application of theory and research to intercultural communication.

ELI 885 Advanced Academic Writing II (Required)
Advanced students who have successfully completed ELI 785 will read additional articles about contemporary American life and then respond in writing. The writing process will include obtaining background information through reading and listening to both sides of each issue, as well as examining case studies. Refining grammatical structures and further vocabulary development are an integral part of this course.

ELI 889 Business English (Elective)
This course is designed to help advanced students develop effective communication skills needed for business purposes. Task-based readings and parallel listening segments will provide students with ample activities for practicing oral and written English in business contexts. In each chapter, students will learn about a different company and examine one aspect of its business practices, concluding with a business meeting in which students attempt to solve a problem or improve the company's policy. Finally, several types of business writing will be introduced and practiced.

ELI 891 Newsweek Magazine (Elective)
This advanced level, content-based course uses current issues of Newsweek magazine to provide students with the opportunities to increase their knowledge about the diversity of American current events in public affairs and culture. Articles from the magazine will provide students with subject matter for in-depth study.

ELI 892 Oral Proficiency II (Required)
This course is designed for advanced students who have completed ELI 792. Students will tackle the challenges of spoken academic situations with clear, comprehensible communication, giving appropriate responses to a given situation. Use of circumlocution and fine shades of meaning will add to confidence of expressing personal opinions.

ELI 893 American History (Elective)
This content-based advanced course will provide an overview of United States History with special attention given to certain topics. Students will read authentic textbook material and listen to lectures in order to understand the USA's constitutional democracy with special attention given to its three branches of government. Students will engage is classroom discussions about the historical connection to current U.S. affairs.

ELI 895 Advanced Research Writing (Elective)
This course guides students through their independent writing projects. Writing skills will be practiced and refined while research techniques are discussed and implemented into individual writing.

ELI 897 Advanced Grammar II (Elective)
The emphasis of this course is to provide an advanced and comprehensive study of communicative grammar, that is, the use of grammar for true communication. Although many students have studied grammar for years in their countries, some still cannot produce the structures in real, communicative situations. This course combines advanced conversation, allowing students to improve their fluency as well as their accuracy in English. Assessing students' speaking skills of the grammar is a focal point of this class.

ELI 898 America and the World (Elective)
This is a content-based, reading and discussion course for Bridge Course students. Using English as a common medium and working towards practical application of English in academic and business settings, students will be challenged to think about and discuss world issues from different perspectives. Student participation is the greatest requirement for a high grade.
