ELI 670 Listening with Video
In this high-intermediate course, students
will improve listening skills through viewing and discussion of American
films. Readings and discussions are held on the cultural context, characters,
and themes found in the videos. Students will practice listening for
the main idea and detailed information as well as making inferences
and participating in academic discussions. Oral and written assignments
based on the readings and videos will help students gain confidence in listening
to American English.
ELI 672 Dramatically Speaking
This high-intermediate
speaking course uses drama activities to help students improve their
spoken fluency and confidence in speaking. Students study and practice
the stress patterns of English and idiomatic language in order to sound
like native speakers. Students write and produce a short film and perform
a play for the ELI student body.
ELI 677 English Through Music & Arts
Through the use of music and arts,
intermediate students will be able to learn about the culture and language
of the USA. Using eras as the theme, students will listen to recordings
characteristics of the period and discuss how the ideas present in
these songs reflect the culture and struggles of the times: war, peace, and
relationship.
ELI 683 Debate
This high-intermediate course focuses on helping
students develop rational debating skills for public speaking, discussion,
research, and writing. Through a series of debates, students will develop
their persuasive speaking skills.
ELI 682 Speaking Solutions
This course
is for high-intermediate students who want to improve their speaking
skills. Using current topics, students will be given speaking and writing
assignments to develop oral presentation skills.
ELI 685 Intermediate
Academic Writing II
This course is designed to prepare students for
college composition courses. Students will read, recognize, and practice
different writing styles. Critical thinking and writing process skills
are developed while practicing and analyzing different rhetorical styles,
including summarizing and paraphrasing as well as process, compare/contrast,
cause and effect, and persuasive essay forms.
ELI 688 Listening/Speaking
in the Community
This high-intermediate course is designed for non-university
bound students who want an opportunity to discuss, listen to, and read
about current issues in American society. Students will read articles
about social issues and discuss them in the classroom, and then take
field trips to local non-profit agencies, museums, government offices,
and businesses to learn about the issues in person. About 50% of the
class time is spent off-campus in experiential learning situations.

696 Academic Writing
Using the Internet This advanced course is designed
to help students learn (a) how to use the Internet as a tool for conducting
academic research and polishing their writing skills, (b) how to publish
and share their writing with the global community on the Internet,
and (c) how do develop computer job skills needed to compete in our
global market.
ELI 697 Intermediate Grammar II
High-intermediate students
will improve and sharpen their grammar skills in this class. Students
at this level will participate in a variety of exercises using reading,
writing, listening and speaking skills. The primary focus of this course
is mastering the use of modals, the passive voice and conditionals.

Please be aware that not all of the classes are offered every session. Students
are evaluated at the end of each session as to their ability to move to the
next level. Due to different backgrounds, learning styles and to the amount
of work a student does outside of class, it may take two or more sessions
for a student to progress to the next level.
