Skill-Building Levels 1-3

ELI 1 Skill Building Grammar and Writing

This is a skill building course designed to prepare students for low-intermediate courses. In ELI 1, students will learn strategies to improve their writing and grammar skills. They will read, discuss, and write about different topics. Students will gain the ability to produce simple and complex sentences and will study and master the following grammar points: verb tenses including progressive tenses and present perfect, "used to" and modals of request and ability.

ELI 2 Skill Building Reading and Communication

This is a skill-building course that emphasizes the development of basic reading comprehension and communicative language skills and provides a cultural orientation. Basic reading, vocabulary, listening, and speaking skills are practiced in interesting topic areas to provide a solid foundation in language ability. Students also record their voice using the software in the computer lab to self-evaluate their progress. This provides the student with more individualized attention from the teacher to help them improve their communicative ability.

Beginning levels 1-3 (Skill-Building)
Intermediate levels 4-5 (Pre-Academic)
High Intermediate 6 (Content-Based)
Bridge course levels 7, 8 (College-Preparation)

Please be aware that not all of the classes are offered every session. Students are evaluated at the end of each session as to their ability to move to the next level. Due to different backgrounds, learning styles and to the amount of work a student does outside of class, it may take two or more sessions for a student to progress to the next level.
