English Language Institute Course Information: Intermediate Levels 4-5

ELI 26 TOEIC Preparation

This course is designed to help students prepare for the TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) by learning and practicing strategies that are needed when taking the TOEIC. The course will make use of diagnostic and practice tests to help students raise their scores in both sections of the test. Vocabulary development will be an important part of the course. Taking this class does not guarantee passing the TOEIC.

ELI 460 Introduction to Functional Communication

This low-intermediate course is designed to help students improve skills in both listening and speaking in real, day-to-day situations. Topics might include describing jobs, talking about people, describing different cultures, and discussing entertainment. This class prepares students for more academic and professional English at the higher levels. Outside activities in the community often are used to reinforce the skills learned in the classroom.

ELI 465 Introduction to Writing

This course is designed to help low intermediate students of English to improve their writing skills. Students will learn and practice writing structures that will be needed for academic purposes, such as writing summaries, narrative essays, and mastering complex sentences.

ELI 466 Introduction to Grammar

This course is designed for low intermediate students of English who wish to improve their spoken and written grammar. Students will concentrate on those structures that often cause difficulty at this level, including present perfect, comparatives and superlatives, gerunds and infinitives, and modals of preference, necessity, and possibility.

ELI 468 Introduction to Reading/Vocabulary

This course helps low-intermediate students improve their reading comprehension and vocabulary development skills by reading short articles as well as an assigned novel. By reviewing and practicing reading skills such as skimming and scanning, students can become better and faster readers. Vocabulary activities and group assignments keep students actively involved.

ELI 569 Pronunciation

This course is designed to help multi-level (intermediate to advanced) second language learners improve individual and general pronunciation problems. Students will use pronunciation software with visual feedback, games, music, books, cassettes, videos, CDs, and authentic live speech samples to practice pronunciation. Students will record their speaking on computer, audio and video cassette, practice conversations in pairs and groups, and learn different strategies for improving their pronunciation. Students will also have opportunities to interact with native English speakers.

ELI 575 Intermediate Academic Writing I

This course is designed to help intermediate students move successfully from single paragraph to multi-paragraph writing. Students will use the writing process to create essays of comparison and narration.

ELI 579 Intermediate Grammar I

This is an intermediate course in which student will study specific grammar structures through communicative, creative activities. Students will learn to identify and use past perfect and past perfect progressive, future perfect and future perfect progressive, negative questions and tags, phrasal verbs, and adjective clauses in speaking and writing.

ELI 586 Intermediate Reading/Vocabulary I

This course is designed to help intermediate students improve their reading skills through a variety of vocabulary lessons integrated with reading strategies. Students will also engage in discussions related to the reading topics.

ELI 587 Intermediate Listening/Speaking I

Intermediate students will improve their fluency while working on accuracy for correct oral grammar and pronunciation. Participation in a variety of discussions is required. A final oral presentation using Power Point will allow students to illustrate their improved speaking skills and build confidence for further academic pursuits.

Please be aware that not all of the classes are offered every session. Students are evaluated at the end of each session as to their ability to move to the next level. Due to different backgrounds, learning styles and to the amount of work a student does outside of class, it may take two or more sessions for a student to progress to the next level.
