Frequently Asked Questions About the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute

Other Questions

How do I give the gift of lifelong learning to others?

What better gift could you give than lifelong learning? Call the Osher office at 801-585-5442 to purchase a gift certificate. Gifts are available in any amount you choose. Check out the membership and class options by following the links to the right and select the best options for your friend or loved one. We will send a letter and certificate to the recipient along with information about membership, classes, and events, and any special note you would like to include.

You can also give the gift of learning by donating to the Osher scholarship fund. Individual donors are making a difference in our community. Gracious friends and supporters like you and others allow us to offer a wide range of courses and programs and to bring the benefits of lifelong learning to more of Utah's 50 and over population. Go to our Support Osher page to learn more about how to add your support. You can also specify a gift when you register. Just tell the person taking your registration the amount of your gift and whether you'd like it to go to the general fund or the scholarship fund. Your gift will be charged to your credit card along with your membership and course fees.

How do I contact an Osher instructor?

Check your course syllabus or outline to see if the instructor has provided contact information. If not, call the Osher office (801-585-5442). We will take your contact information and relay that to the instructor, who will contact you.

Are there other schools across the country with Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes?

Yes, there are quite a few, take a look at the interactive map on this page. The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at the U is the only Osher Institute in Utah.

What is the difference between Osher Lifelong Learning and Lifelong Learning?

Although both are noncredit programs open to community members, the two programs vary in important ways. The Osher Institute is a membership program exclusively for adults 50 and over. Students pay a membership fee that entitles them the full array of member benefits, to take courses at the Institute, and to attend special events and other activities for members. Osher classes are held during the day in easily accessible locations with ample parking. Courses are selected by a committee of members and teaching is tailored to meet the needs of the mature learner.

Lifelong Learning is open to adults 18 and over, and most classes are held weeknights or weekends. Osher Institute members receive a 25% tuition discount on Lifelong Learning classes on a space available basis.

How can I receive information about future classes?

You may be added to Osher's email list or regular mailing list. Please call 801-585-5442 or email osher@aoce.utah.edu to request to be added to either or both lists. Or sign up online here to receive emails.

Since I joined Osher I have noticed an increase in the amount of junk mail I am receiving. Is there a connection?

We are so sorry you are receiving junk mail! The University of Utah does not sell, rent, or share lists of our students' addresses or other contact information with any third parties. The University student, faculty, and staff directory is on line and individual student information can be accessed easily at www.utah.edu. It is possible that data mining companies have devised schemes to collect the information in the directory without our authorization. These companies make their living searching the Internet and putting together lists which they then sell for profit.

You can request that your information be excluded from the on line student directory and still receive Osher related mailings like catalogs and newsletters. Excluding your information from the student directory will limit the business you can conduct with Osher and the university over the telephone. Please pick up the required form from the info table at classes, or visit the Registrar's website for the required form. You'll need your student ID number. It is printed on your Osher Member Name Badge. Replace the leading "u" with a zero. See the note on the form regarding providing your social security number. Providing it is at your discretion. Not providing it will not affect your Osher membership in any way.

Where is the Osher office?
