About the UMCIA
The Utah Municipal Clerk's Institute and Academy (UMCIA) was created by The Center for Public Policy and Administration and Professional Education at the University of Utah in collaboration with the Utah Municipal Clerks Association (UMCA) to address the need for continual professional development and learning of Utah's Municipal Clerks.
Professional development is fundamental to keeping up-to-date with knowledge, improving skills and productivity, filling leadership gaps, and demonstrating commitment to our professions. It also helps turn responsibility into positive opportunity to identify and achieve career goals.
The UMCIA is held once-per-year over a one-week period of time. The curriculum is carefully developed in conjunction with the UMCA Board of Directors and the UMCIA Planning Committee. It reflects feedback from previous attendees and is in keeping with guidelines established by the International Institute of Municipal Clerks (IIMC).
The goal of the UMCIA workshops is to provide you with immediately applicable tools and skills to apply to your job. Coursework focuses on the development of technical skills, administrative knowledge, leadership abilities, financial management and personal development. Instructors are of the highest caliber and come from a variety of professional backgrounds including university faculty, government officials and other subject matter experts from the public and private sectors.

The Utah Municipal Clerks Institute and Academy is accredited by the International Institute of Municipal Clerks (IIMC) and meets the IIMC education requirements for the Certified Municipal Clerk (CMC) and Master Municipal Clerk (MMC).
A Certified Municipal Clerk (CMC) certification is a distinction granted by the International Institute of Municipal Clerks (IIMC) to clerks who complete three years of full attendance, at a recognized Institute and/or has fulfilled other educational or experience requirements. A clerk must receive 120 hours of continuing professional education provided through an Institute. Each year, the Utah Municipal Clerks Institute and Academy (UMCIA) provides instruction in the areas of public administration, interpersonal and organizational dynamics, and current issues and strategies specific to the clerks profession. Three years of attendance at the UMCIA are required in order to apply for certification. These need not be consecutive years. Other requirements include membership in the International Institute of Municipal Clerks (IIMC). For additional information and to apply, please visit www.iimc.com.
A Master Municipal Clerk (MMC) certification is an advanced continuing education program that prepares participants to perform complex municipal duties. Like the CMC designation, the MMC is granted by the International Institute of Municipal Clerks (IIMC). Those seeking the MMC designation must hold a CMC and be in good standing. The program has an extensive and rigorous educational component and a professional and social contribution component. The MMC applicant must demonstrate that they have actively pursued education and professional activities. All coursework through the UMCIA is pre-approved by the IIMC for hours towards the Certified Municipal Clerk (60 points) and the Master Municipal Clerk (60 points).

Professional Development Day
Master Municipal Clerks Professional Development Day
The Utah Municipal Clerks Academy and Institute is pleased to offer a new program targeted to seasoned MMC recipients. Each year we will offer a one-day professional education program that focuses on the development of a specific skill area designed to keep you abreast of industry best practices. In addition, you will have an opportunity to engage in a lively discussion with your peers about a variety of specific clerk issues.
When making reservations, please make reference to the Utah Municipal Clerk's Conference for the reduced room rate. Deadline for early bird registration is Feb 24th.
To receive credit toward your MMC or CMC designation, you must turn in your KTAP within 15 business days of the last day of the Academy or Institute. KTAPs received after the deadline will not receive credit. You must submit your KTAP online. The KTAP is intended to help you reflect on the program and identify areas for improvement; therefore, we encourage you to share your KTAP with your management.
