Rocky Mountain Talent Search
For 3rd - 9th grade students

The Rocky Mountain Talent Search (RMTS) is an academic talent search program providing opportunities for assessment and recognition, as well as special summer programs for academically talented youth.

RMTS invites capable and motivated 6th through 9th grade students to take the SAT or ACT college entrance test not usually taken until high school. Younger students (grades 3 through 6) take the challenging EXPLORE test. These tests provide a higher ceiling for students who already test at the upper limits of in-grade assessments.

This above-level testing experience allows students to:

  • better evaluate their strengths
  • practice taking a more challenging test
  • compare their scores with other high achieving students
  • qualify for special summer opportunities
  • receive recognition of their outstanding abilities
  • receive suggestions for educational planning

Gifted and Talented district coordinators, facilitators, and counselors receive packets for the Rocky Mountain Talent Search each fall. The materials include a coordinator guide, applications, and test site locations. Financial aid is available for qualified students. For further information, go to www.rockymountaintalentsearch.org.

STEP ONE: Parents submit an application and fee of $30 to RMTS by mid-November in order to receive a registration packet for January/February out-of-level tests (tests must be completed by February to be eligible to participate in the award ceremony at the University of Utah).

STEP TWO: After receiving the test registration packet, parents mail test fee and completed test registration materials to the test company. The only exception is the EXPLORE test. The testing fee of $26 is submitted along with the application fee to RMTS.

In the spring, students are sent an Interpretive Guide to help them understand their scores and review how they scored relative to other academically talented students their age. This guide includes suggestions for educational planning. They also receive a Summer Opportunities Guide describing educational opportunities for high ability students in the Rocky Mountain region, including the Youth Academy of Excellence at the University of Utah.

The RMTS Awards Ceremony is held at the University of Utah each May for the highest scoring Utah participants.
