I have a Question
It is the study of how people in the past "have understood the phenomena in the sky, how they used phenomena in the sky, and what role the sky played in their cultures."
It is the “science of stars and stones”. It is an interdisciplinary science in between architecture, archaeology, and astronomy.
It is a fascinating discipline, in which the relationship between ancient constructions and the sky is studied to gain a better understanding of the ideas of the architects of the past and their religious and symbolic worlds.
You may already know that many of the great monuments and ceremonial constructions of early civilizations were astronomically aligned. The accurate cardinal orientation of the Great Pyramid at Giza in Egypt or the Venus alignment of the magnificent Maya Palace of the Governor at Uxmal in Yucatan are outstanding examples. We learn much about the development of science and cosmological thought from the study of both the ancient astronomies and surviving indigenous traditions around the world.
In collaboration with Mountain Lodges of Peru, Dr. Mendoza and Go Learn have created this incredible, multi-angled exploration of Peru. While the cities of Lima, Cusco, the Nazca Lines, The Sacred Valley, and the crown-jewel of all of Peru’s destinations – Machu Picchu, all are included and investigated, the beauty of this trip is the over-arching learning about the Inca Empire, its history, their enormous temple complexes, their culture, as well as how astronomy and the calendar play such a gigantic influence on the Inca people, including their architecture. This trip is a string of in-depth visits to archeological sites, paired with incredible natural beauty surrounding, incredible, top-notch accommodations and cuisine.
About PeruJune is pretty much the best month to visit Peru. It’s coastal regions and high-altitude Andes ranges can throw the entire weather-pallet at tourists, and June might be the most comfortable of all months. Peru is a modern state, most visible in the cities of Lima and Cusco, but a strong connection to its indigenous past is immediately evident. Inca culture is not dead, and we will learn this by visiting the locals. An amazing cross-cultural society, Peru offers an amazing cuisine reflecting this fact. The cross-breed between Spanish, Inca, and Latin American cuisine will not disappoint.
Activity Levels and RestrictionsWe like to be up-front: this trip is to be considered strenuous by most traveler’s standards. We will spend long days exploring cities, museums, temple complexes and more. In order to fully explore the items on our itinerary, we will be walking every day, on some days hiking the large temple complexes including parts of the Inca Trail. We may stand on our feet for prolonged periods of time. Good, broken-in hiking shoes, layered clothing, and daypacks for water, snacks, and gear are a must-have. Go Learn and Dr. Mendoza will provide you with an extensive packing list and prepare you in detail weeks before our journey begins This is an Activity Level 3 trip.
