Tour Leader: Michael Gills

Michael Gills Distinguished Honors Professor 2012-13, Professor/Lecturer, Honors College

FINISTERRE, a visionary memoir detailing the Gills family's pilgrimage across north Spain on the Camino de Santiago, was released by Raw Dog Screaming Press in May 2020. The author of a quartet of novels, four collections of short fiction, and two books of essays, Gills is Professor/Lecturer of writing for the Honors College at the University of Utah. A PEN/Faulkner Award nominee whose work has been listed in The Best American Short Stories and Pushcart Prize Anthology, his undergraduate novel writing workshop was featured in USA Today, and several of his students have gone on to publish books of their own. He looks forward--again--to joining fellow peregrinos on the ride of a lifetime, through the ancient culture and beauty that is the heart of the Camino.

Tour Leader: Christoph Dressler

Christoph Dressler Associate Director, Education

A four-time veteran of the Camino de Santiago, Christoph is very much looking forward to opening up the path for you to discover your very own, special journey to the resting place of the Apostle Saint James.

As an East German, having grown up behind the “Iron Curtain”, Christoph, originally green to the world beyond his hamlet, would have never thought of being able to take a group of Americans on an adventure as this. Having guided for Rick Steves in the early 2000s, he thoroughly studied European history, often enjoying lectures by the best local guides any place has to offer. Christoph turned into a huge fan of the Camino and can’t wait to share its history, from Celtic origins, to pilgrimage route, to today’s importance as First European Agenda with you. He especially enjoys discovering a land from the saddle of a bicycle and the reward of some of the best food in the world, stunning accommodations, and conversations about the day’s discoveries.
