Mountain Guiding: Introduction to
Academic Noncredit

This course prepares students for a career in mountain guiding. Course content includes client management, client security, guide security, route planning and selection, group dynamics, risk management, skill development and certifications, guiding lifestyle, and professionalism. Additional focus will include permitting through United States National Forest, Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service, and State Parks. Emphasis on minimum-impact wilderness travel and public land policy will be included. Students should have competency in either (a) rock climbing, (b) ice climbing, (c) mountaineering, or (d) skiing before enrolling in this course.

This noncredit class meets with a regular University of Utah credit course.

Online book and material fees may be added up until the first week of class. Students may opt out during the first two weeks of class. Additional focus will include permitting through United States National Forest, Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service, and State Parks. Emphasis on minimum-impact wilderness travel and public land policy is included. Students should have competency in either (a) rock climbing, (b) ice climbing, (c) mountaineering, or (d) skiing before enrolling in this course. This course is taught by an AMGA certified guide. Attendance at first class meeting is mandatory. Drops not possible after the 2nd day following this meeting. Class meets October 18-19 only. Field classes Oct. 21 and 22.
