The Metropolitan Museum of Art spent five years reimagining its European collection while remodeling the second floor galleries, beautifully lit by 30,00 square feet of new skylights. For the first time, the collection unfolds in a single chronology, merging paintings from across the continent, North and South. The new installation emphasizes issues many museums struggle with today and now includes many more works by women and other historically underrepresented artists. Curators address questions about how people and cultures of European colonies are reflected in paintings by European artists, and new hangings examine the distortions, influences and interplay between the arts of these two different worlds. Other highlights include a stunning, freshly cleaned Aristotle with a Bust of Homer by Rembrandt and new compare and contrast displays. For example, Duccio's Madonna and Child of 1300 is paired with an Ingres painting of The Virgin Adoring the Host of 1852, while a Picasso hangs next to El Greco paintings that inspired him. Your instructors have chosen a selection of paintings most interesting to them and hope to facilitate a dynamic, enriching group discussion of these works and the Met's new perspectives and reinterpretations.
