Some volcanoes are fantastic and dangerous. Others are passive and quiet. Plate tectonics is the driving force behind volcanoes and that is where this course will begin. We will study the mechanism of explosive volcanoes, like Krakatoa, Pompeii, Mount Saint Helens, and Crater Lake. We will explore the more passive volcanoes of Hawaii, Iceland, and the Columbia flood basalts. We will also look at the volcanoes of Utah. There is a lot to see. All of this will allow us to understand volcanoes here and throughout the world.
