We are all Irish on St. Patrick's Day. So let's invoke the spirit with three classic stories from the Emerald Isle of young people navigating somewhat less-than-ideal circumstances. However, each resonates with hope, strength, and, above all--love. We will read and discuss "The Story of Lucy Gault" by William Trevor, "The All of It" by Jeanette Haien, and "Foster" by Claire Keega. Each is exquisitely written and critically acclaimed. By appreciating the intricacies of the writing craft inherent in dealing with dialect and other cultural matters, we will gain a better understanding of the Irish worldview. "Worse than the ordinary miserable childhood is the miserable Irish childhood, and worse yet is the miserable Irish Catholic childhood." --Frank McCourt
