Depicting food in art has a long history from antiquity to present day. In the visual arts, food is a "feast for the eyes" that gives insight into culture, symbolism, trade, status, customs, and consumerism. The course will address food art in ancient times, in 17th century Dutch and Flemish paintings, as well as in Modern and Contemporary art. In addition to paintings, the class will view and discuss food portrayed in sculpture, architecture, and installations.
