The Olympic Games have become the world's most famous and popular sports event, unmatched in drama, spectacle, pageantry and worldwide television audience. To enable students to be better informed observers of the Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, Korea in February 2018, as well as future Winter and Summer Olympic Games, this course will examine the history of the Winter Games and Paralympics; Olympic symbols, principles, ceremonies, and administration; media coverage of the Olympics; and current issues affecting the future of the Games. Attention will also be given to issues that arise before and during the PyeongChang Games.
