This online, self-paced course delves more deeply into nutrition, performance, and optimal wellness. Master the tools needed to provide educated answers on nutrition and overall well-being. Learn how to navigate through the media's mixed messages on sports nutrition, supplementation, and diets. Effectively interpret nutrition news, and understand critical information on the science behind vitamins/proteins, minerals, and antioxidants. Five-week Course Outline: I. Genomics and Evidence Based Medicine and Written Project Details; II. New, Yet Old Healthful Diets and Quiz 1 Due; III. Vitamins Role, Functions, and Recommendations and Topic-Websites Due; IV. New Concepts in Wellness and Outline Due; V. What’s New in Cancer Prevention and in Minerals, Written Project and Final Exam Due Objectives: 1) Students will be able to clearly define evidence based medicine; 2) Students will understand the connection between evidence based medicine and interpreting new nutrition reports and news in the media; 3) Students will be able to define nutritiongenomics and how this will effect future wellness intervention; 4) Students will understand the science behind nutrition and the role that dietary factors play in both the prevention of disease and as contributing factors; 5) Students will re-define perceptions of nutrition reported in the media such as the French Paradox and the Milk Myth for weight loss; 6) Students will be able to define key concepts of vitamin and mineral function in health; 7) Students will gain exposure to different types of diets and how they can play a role in nutrition and wellness; 8) Students will be able to list new concepts in heart disease and cancer prevention.
