Communicating insights through data visualizations remains a
critical but rare skill in today's world. When done properly, data can
tell a story that deepens understanding and prompts strategic action.
Advancements in technology have created powerful visualization tools
that go far beyond traditional Excel tables and charts. One of the
most popular and preeminent visualization tools available is Tableau,
which offers a user-friendly platform to create dynamic visualizations
that can be utilized by a variety of skill levels -- from analysts to
managers. Positioned towards new users to Tableau, this course
explores the fundamentals of data visualization techniques with
Tableau. In addition to the practical knowledge of working with
Tableau, students will learn the best practices of data visualization.
Students will walk away with a published dashboard that will showcase
the skills learned throughout the course. Students will also be
provided with a student license to Tableau for free.
This course is designed with two
broad audiences in mind. First, this course will be effective for
anyone in an analyst-type role who wants to grow their skills in data
visualization and analysis. Second, this course will also be effective
for experienced professionals who would like to build their data
analysis skill set. For this course to be beneficial, it is recommended
that students have a working knowledge of excel. Ideally, students will
bring at least one year of work experience to the classroom experience,
although some educational backgrounds can substitute for this. No other
technical skill set is required.
By the end of the course, students
will complete a final data analysis project. Utilizing a real data set,
this project will be a published interactive dashboard that will
showcase the skills learned throughout the course.
successful completion of the course
will be based on attendance and completion of the final project using
Tableau. Because of the hands-on nature of these classes, 70%
attendance is required for completion. Students with unexpected
conflicts who cannot meet attendance requirements may take the next
scheduled class as no cost.
