I have a Question
When the weather turns blessedly cool after the rigors of summer, our hearts naturally turn to—London and the world’s best theatre, of course! Author Peter Ackroyd nailed it when he wrote, “London goes beyond any boundary or convention. It contains every wish or word ever spoken, every action or gesture ever made, every harsh or noble statement ever expressed. It is illimitable. It is Infinite London (London: The Biography).” We invite you to join us for ten unforgettable days in this Capital of Culture, our favorite place in the world—or rejoin us, for as historian and novelist Walter Besant noted, “I’ve been walking about London for the last thirty years, and I find something fresh in it every day.” Indeed. We are planning now an autumn itinerary of theatre productions, events, and meals calculated to astonish, delight, and enlighten. We can’t wait to share them with you!
Filled with one-of-a-kind visits and experiences, this trip will leave you happily tired. It includes days exploring London as a group and some late nights of theatre performances, and the pace is brisk. We average 4-6 miles (approximately 10,000 steps) of walking and 100 stairs per day. Travel is by public transportation (included in the price of the trip), and participants should be able to board Tube trains and buses independently, though we will always lead the way in group activities. The group comes first, so participants who wish to travel by taxi must make their own independent arrangements and expect to pay about $600 extra.

“To learn gives the liveliest pleasure.”
The above quote from Aristotle’s Poetics is the motto of our London on Stage trips. Learning a little about each play, art exhibition, and historical site beforehand makes experiencing them all the more pleasurable. And it’s sheer pleasure to discuss them together afterwards. We’ll accomplish both in scheduled chats on most days—accompanied by tea, coffee, hot chocolate, etc.
Important Note: This itinerary is provisional. Times and dates of events are subject to change.
We'll arrange your transportation from Heathrow Airport to The Rockwell, our charming boutique hotel in South Kensington—where complimentary breakfast is served every morning. After you're settled in, we'll go on a walking tour of our ‘hood, the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, where various Windsors are our neighbors over at Kensington Palace—capped by a delicious Welcome Dinner. Early to bed will help us beat jetlag.

We’ll start in the morning with a privately arranged visit to Middle Temple Hall, the Elizabethan masterpiece where Shakespeare, himself, performed. We’ve arranged for a regal room off the Hall for today’s chat. In the afternoon we’ll make our way to the National Portrait Gallery, where we’ve put together our own (brief) exhibition, “Eminent Portraits.” Dinner and a (we hope, Shakespeare) play in the evening.

After our chat, we’ll begin this adventurous day at the world’s best street market. The Saturday-only Portobello Road Market has something for everyone. It’s famous for its antiques and vintage items, but it also features a superb collection of fashion, food, crafts, and books. Plus, you know, there’s a song about it in Bedknobs & Broomsticks, so… Then it’s off to Neal’s Yard, Britain’s finest cheese monger, for a private tasting event featuring (wait for it) British cheeses of remarkable distinction and variety, paired with lots of other yummy eateries and drinkeries. Play in the evening.

We’ll start this busy Sunday at the British Museum, where we’ll experience a private “Out-of-Hours” tour of two of the most beautiful and diverse of the galleries: the Enlightenment Gallery and the Collecting the World Gallery. Afterwards we’ll head to the Tower of London to feed our souls at a matins service at St. Peter ad Vincula, the Tower’s Chapel Royal, which features a truly world-class church choir. Then we’ll take in the Crown Jewels at the vault next door at the Tower. Nourished souls cry out to be accompanied by nourished bodies, so afterwards we’ll make our way to the nearby Four Seasons Hotel, where we’ll have swanky Afternoon Tea in the Rotunda Bar & Lounge. Free evening.

In this case, the influence refers to a great artist of the past’s massive influence on a brilliant contemporary artist. The place to see that is at the Royal Academy of Art, so after an educational chat with Kent, we’ll make our way there for the Kiefer/Van Gogh Exhibition. When Anselm Kiefer was 17, he encountered the amazing late work of Vincent van Gogh, and it formed his artistic sensibilities in a major way that can only be understood by seeing their paintings together. This exhibition asks the wider question: where does inspiration come from? Enjoy the rest of your day. We’ll meet in the evening for a great play.

This morning our chats begin—either at a private room upstairs at the nearby King’s Head Pub, or at the Rockwell (either way, tea, coffee, or hot chocolate cheerfully dispensed). Our amazing artist and arts educator Kent Christensen will prepare us for the major exhibition we’re seeing on this day at the National Gallery, Radical Harmony: Helen Kröller-Müller’s Neo-Impressionists. Let’s get Pointillist! Dinner and a play that night.

After our chat we’re off to architect Sir Christopher Wren’s masterpiece, St. Paul’s Cathedral, where we’ve arranged a private exploration of parts generally unseen (but well worth seeing!) that will yield gasp-producing views from high up in the triforium. Oh, and once the tour is completed, do follow us down to the crypt. It’s where Lawrence of Arabia is interred. Enough said. In the evening we’ll go to play #5.

And what a day! We’ll start with a private tour of Kettle’s Yard. An artist and passionate advocate of contemporary art, Jim Ede and his wife Helen turned a cluster of Tudor-era almshouses in Cambridge into a home for themselves and contemporary art. Willed to the university, it remains just that, a house and gallery synergistically combined. After lunch, we’ll visit Trinity College, Cambridge, and explore its exquisite Wren Library with the able help of a scholar who will show us priceless manuscripts, including such treasures as an 8th Century text of the apostle Paul’s epistles, the first edition of Isaac Newton’s Principia Mathematica with his handwritten notes, early Shakespeare folios, and A.A. Milne’s manuscript of Winnie-the-Pooh. In the evening we’ll attend a sublime choral evensong service at a Cambridge college.

No autumn trip to London is complete without walking among the October colors at World Heritage Site Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Take as long as you like strolling among trees that pre-date the American Revolution, visiting tropical Palm House and the largest-in-the-world Temperate House, taking in the art at two galleries, visiting the lake with its swans and other aquatic fowl, and on and on: 300 acres of highly oxygenated bliss. In the evening we’ll get together one last time for a great meal and terrific play.

We’ll get you back to the airport, or wherever you’re going next, with but one wish in our hearts: that we all get together again in brilliant, boisterous, beautiful London!

About London
It’s hard to fit what London is into one sentence, but let's give it a shot: London is the capital of the United Kingdom (and hence has all the Washington D.C.-type buildings), and it also has hundreds of historical sites from a Roman temple to Jimi Hendrix's apartment, and it's also the biggest city in the European Union (8.5 million) with the most diverse population (270 nationalities and 300 languages—imagine what that means for restaurants, yum), and it’s also one of the world’s premier financial and commercial hubs (um, shopping), and it has the most museums in the world (173, with 11 of them national museums, and unlike other European cities, they're mostly FREE); it also has the most restaurants in the world (37,450), 5,000 acres of parks (8 of them Royal) and 214 theatres to which 14.2 million people flock each year (including us); plus it has fourteen football clubs, including 6 Premier League teams, is home to the tallest building in the UK (the Shard) and has hosted the Olympic Summer Games 3 times. Whew! But it isn't all about bigness and most-ness. London is also home to quiet nooks and curious crannies—truly an adventure around every corner.
Weather:
The temperature range in October is 50º-60º, and there is always a chance of rain. Bring a water-resistant jacket, water resistant shoes, warm clothing, and an umbrella to be ready for British weather. The best news: the London crowds will be reduced and we’ll get more of London to ourselves and the weather will still be lovely.
Activity levels and restrictions
In order to fully explore the sights on our itinerary, we will be walking every day. Most city walking is flat on paved surfaces. When visiting gardens, museums and churches, we may be walking long distances or standing on our feet for prolonged times. Be sure to bring comfortable walking shoes! Since we will be waking up early with jet lag, we often will start our days early and continue until sundown. Our exciting itinerary and daily learning adventures will keep you happily exhausted.
