Please note that this itinerary is a work in progress. As festival programming is announced and artists’ schedules become available, we will react, add, shift, and enhance this amazing experience. Watch this space!

Wednesday, July 8: Welcome to Montreal! Bienvenue à Montréal!

Queen of the world church domeToday everyone will arrive in Quebec and the city of Montreal. Independently, we’ll all find our way to the iconic Hotel Gault, located in Old Town with immediate access right out its front doors to this most charming city. Behind its magnificent nineteenth century façade built in Montreal Greystone, Hotel Gault features a contemporary décor with a refined service that will make your stay most memorable. In the evening, join Brooke and our other curious travelers at a scrumptious welcome-dinner with the unique cosmopolitan flair this city offers.

Thursday, July 9: The City of Mary – The International Stage for Circus Arts

Old Town MontrealFirst things first – we’ll start our program by getting to know the city that hosts us. Our local guide will introduce her city with one eye on the history and culture of Montreal and the other on getting to know hidden treasures, shortcuts, the cirque festival around us, and the art-scene at large.

Next, we’ll take advantage of the Festival’s professional programming, which serves as a gathering point for the circus world internationally and the North American performing arts presenting sector. With a variety of thematic panel discussions and workshops by leading circus organizations, artists, and presenters, we’ll have a host of interesting things to learn.

Finally, we’ll take all these new insights and head off to enjoy our first evening of international circus performance!

Friday, July 10: Behind the Curtain

Today, we’ll get to look behind the curtain and share our first exclusive encounter with Montreal’s Les 7 Doigts. The 7 Fingers, an arts collective unlike any other with 7 collaborating founders, set out to redefine circus by stripping down the spectacle to its thrilling essence. We’ll explore their Centre of Creation and Production which is situated in the heart of Montreal’s downtown theater district. This new centre houses all of the company’s activities, departments and dreams under one roof.

After an amazing dinner together, we’ll see the 7 Fingers in action at an evening performance and share in the discovery of this Tony, Drama Desk, Outer Critics, and Off-Broadway Alliance award-winning troupe!

Saturday, July 11: Circus Everywhere!

Montreal Botanical GardensOur Montreal Cirque Festival passport allows us access to roam the festival this morning and appreciate the city to the fullest. You may find yourself wandering the amazing botanical gardens Montreal has to offer, but don’t venture too far, as we plan on another big-ticket show early in the day. Afterwards, we’ll resurface into the world of street performances. Imagine bringing this back to Salt Lake City!

Before the evening’s entertainment, we’ll pick up our conversation about the professional circus industry. We’ll meet with Ruth Wikler, Deputy Director of Programming, for TOHU. A unique, circular hall designed in the purest of circus tradition, TOHU is a key part of what makes Montreal an international hub of circus arts. Learn from this accomplished performing arts curator about her unique history and current work with emerging and established contemporary circus artists and companies. Brainstorm with Ruth and Brooke about how to create partnerships and build bridges between Montreal and Salt Lake City.

Of course, we’ll spend our last night discovering one more show, in hopes that we find the perfect company to invite to a future UtahPresents season! A scrumptious dinner, and pre-show conversation with Brooke and our fellow travelers will all be a part of this evening’s delights.

Sunday, July 12: Au revoir Montréal, à bientót Cirque!

Montreal Cirque PerformerMinds and hearts full, we depart today. Having been inspired, imagined, dreamed, and taken notes, we’ll have met our goal to explore and discover contemporary circus arts. With part one of our mission accomplished we’ll head home, but our task is not done. In the weeks to come, if you wish, we’ll invite you to join Brooke and UtahPresents to share your reflections and help envision how to bring the magic of the Festival to Salt Lake City. Who would we invite? Which shows would we share with our friends and family? How might we turn Salt Lake City into the Big Top of the west?!
