June 16 - Arrival to Lima, Welcome Dinner

Welcome to Lima, the beautiful capitol of Peru! After checking into the hotel, we will meet the group for our welcome reception and feast on a delicious traditional Peruvian dinner! Enjoy an early night to prepare for the busy upcoming itinerary!

June 17 - Flight to Cusco, walking tour

PeruOur expedition starts with a flight to Cusco. Don’t worry; we will explore Lima on the back end of the trip. Upon arrival, we will have a tour of the city! Cusco was once the capital of the Inca Empire and is known for its archaeological sites and Spanish colonial architecture. We will take a lunch break at a local restaurant in the city before visiting the Qoricancha Temple. This Inca temple of the sun, with a Spanish church built on its foundations, is one of the most unique places to visit in Cusco. Our guides will give us a unique perspective on its history. In the evening, we will have another happy hour lecture on the Sacsaywaman complex, which the Inca built in the 15th century by Andres.

June 18 - The Sacred Valley Pisaq/Lamay

peruToday we travel to the Inca’s Sacred Valley, located on the Vilcanota River. Pisaq, a town with numerous Inca ruins and traditional markets, is a feast to the eye in itself. We once more have the chance to time-travel far into the Inca Empire when visiting Pisaq’s Inca Complex. This multi-purpose residence, citadel, observatory, and religious site bears many lessons in architecture, astronomy, and the incorporation of the nightly sky reflected in the location and purpose of buildings, streets, and temples. The views into the Sacred Valley from the complex’s, terraces watch tours, and guard posts are breathtaking. Tonight we stay at the amazing Lamay Lodge of Mountain Lodges of Peru.

June 19 - Ancasmarka ruins and Choquecancha’s weavers

peruHigh in the Andes tiny villages speckle the lush, green mountainsides, surrounded by enormous, snow-capped mountain ranges. Pre-Inca civilizations have left their mark here, and perfectly round stone structures served as grain storage and shelters to man and animals. We will immerse ourselves in a culture dating back over 2,000 years, walking among their houses and structures, learning from our guide how the people of these mountains lived in a world and time unimaginable to us. Equally amazing are the preserved traditions and crafts. Today we will visit the expert weavers of Choquecancha village. Striking colors and ancient patterns make their cloth absolutely unique and made of Llama wool surprisingly luxurious as well. Our accommodation tonight, the Huacahuasi Lodge, is seemingly located at the end of the earth. We will receive a pre-lecture on tomorrow’s destination, Ollantaytambo.

June 20 - Pumamarka and Ollantaytambo

DC NeighborhoodThe Pumamarka ruin complex is one secret treasure we want you to see. We will explore this archeological site that is not known to many tourists with our guide Andres. Andres will teach us about this abandoned city that is known to have once guarded one entrance to the Sacred Valley. Pumamarka is linked by an Inca trail to Ollantaytambo, a living Inca Culture built on ancient foundations. This is a chance for us to experience the Inca culture today, which is as alive as can be. We will stay at the El Albergue Hotel tonight

June 21 - The Pyramid of Pacaritampu

Early this morning, we will be hiking uphill to have the best perspective to witness the unique Pyramid of Pacaritampu, where we will learn the astroarcheological importance of the site; also, this morning, we will spend some more time at the beautiful Ollantaytambo town,. We will have lunch at our hotel and this afternoon take a train to Aguas Calientes, where we will stay at the Inkaterra Machupicchu. One might describe this hotel complex as an intimate Andean village with terraced hills, waterfalls, stone pathways, and 83 casitas located on 12 acres of exquisite natural beauty, home to 214 bird and 372 orchid species.

June 22 - Machu Picchu

Machi PichuWhile everything we have experienced on our journey thus far is enough for a life-time worth of memories, visiting Peru without seeing Machu Picchu would be incomplete, to say the least. Today we visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the World’s 7 New Wonders. Andres and Daniel will once more prepare us for what we are about to see, and help us to really see. You will marvel at Machu Picchu as a whole, trying to comprehend the location and how it may have been built. We are happy to have our guides then go into more detail about this enormous complex. All we have learned on this tip will come into play once more. Machu Picchu, we believe, will make sense to you from an archeological and astronomical point of view and even beyond.

June 23 - Sacsaywaman + Qoricancha + flight to Lima (PM)

peruPrepared by last night’s lecture, we will enjoy a private tour with the Bohic Ruz research team. They will guide us through the Sacsaywaman complex. The experts will teach us the meaning and the process for building this immense megalithic structure. Located at 12,000 feet altitude, we will gaze in disbelieve at giant building blocks, some estimated to weigh up to 200 tons each, all impeccably aligned with exact purpose and arranged without mortar to hold it together. This World Heritage Site harbors a number of secrets, all for us to unlock and see, to study, and to understand. After lunch and free time in Cusco, we fly back to Lima for the next part of our adventure.

June 24 - Lima Colonial downtown, museums + malecon

Cpaitol DomeToday we return to Lima. Once settled into the hotel we will receive a guided tour of downtown Lima. Lima was founded as Ciudad de Los Reyes (City of the Kings) by Pizarro in 1535 and has a strong colonial influence. Palaces, museums, cathedrals and other buildings with rich heritage will be explored, followed by lunch at a local restaurant.

In the afternoon we will visit Barranco, Lima’s art district. This bohemian neighborhood is home to Peru’s leading artists, musicians and a vibrant cultural scene. We will walk along the ocean boardwalk and soak up the interesting history, museums, vendors and delightful Peruvian food!

June 25 - Pachacamac/Paracas

NPR StudiosEarly this morning, we will head to Pachacamac, an archeological site about 25 miles from Lima. Pachacamac was first settled around 200 A.D. and was named after the god Pachacamac. A guided visit of the site will provide more insight into the 1,300 years that the civilization thrived before the Spanish invaded. After a roadside lunch, we will say goodbye to Lima and head to the next city on the tour, Paracas.

June 26 - Paracas Candelabro + Islas Ballestas

PeruThe day begins with a visit to Candelabro de Paracas and Islas Ballestas off the southern coast of Peru. A boat ride around the uninhabited islands will get us up close and personal with local wildlife like sea lions and pelicans and take us to a bluff where a prehistoric geoglyph in the shape of a candlestick can be found. After lunch at the hotel, the rest of the afternoon is yours to explore optional activities like the Huacachina Oasis or a Pisco Tasting. In the evening, Daniel will give us a happy hour lecture about the Nazca lines to prepare us for tomorrow's adventure.

June 27 - Nazca Lines and return to Lima

PeruToday’s once-in-a-lifetime experience takes us on a thrilling flight over the enigmatic Nazca lines. The Nazca Lines are about 300 pre-Columbian geoglyphs that are etched into the desert floor and cover approximately 1,000 sq. km. The lines take the shape of a variety of figures, such as plants and animals. After an exciting morning in the air we will learn more about the Bohic Ruz in Cusco and head back to Lima for one night before our flight to the imperial city of the Incas.

June 28 - Departure
Peru

Unfortunately, this is our last morning in Peru and where we will part ways! We will miss spending time together in this fascinating country. Head to the Lima airport or continue on to other adventures!

Day 1 - Arrival to Puerto Maldonado

Day 2 - Inkaterra Canopy Walkway

Climb the exhilarating Inkaterra Canopy Walkway for an unforgettable opportunity to observe the rainforest from its rooftop. Originally designed for scientific research, a sophisticated network of seven suspension bridges are strung between eight treetop observation platforms over 30 metres (100 feet) above the forest floor, with the jungle stretching out beneath you.

Day 3 - Return to Puerto Maldonado

Return by motorized canoe to the city of Puerto Maldonado for your onward flight.
