Dr. C. David Whiteman is an Emeritus Research Professor in the Atmospheric Sciences Department at the University of Utah. His area of study, mountain meteorology, reflects his life-long interest in mountaineering, ski patrolling, hiking, rock climbing, and fly fishing.
Dr. Whiteman earned a Ph.D. at Colorado State University studying local-scale wind circulations in mountain valleys. He then worked for 24 years as a Senior Research Scientist and Staff Scientist at the Department of Energy's Pacific Northwest Laboratory in Richland, Washington. During this time, he wrote a textbook published in 2000 entitled "Mountain Meteorology: Fundamentals and Applications". He joined the University of Utah in 2005 as a Research Professor, where he enjoyed teaching, guiding graduate students, leading field studies and writing research articles.
His research topics include the buildup and breakdown of temperature inversions in mountain valleys and basins and their effects on atmospheric dispersion, frost damage in vineyards, and interactions of local and regional scale circulations in mountainous terrain. His broad range of interests have led him to study semi-diurnal solar tides and meteorological effects produced by solar eclipses.
He has done field research in the Salt Lake Valley, Utah's Peter Sinks basin, Arizona's Meteor Crater, California's Central and Owens valleys, the Columbia Basin, Austria's Wipp valley, the Basin of Mexico and many Colorado valleys.
Dr. Whiteman interacts frequently with scientists in other mountainous regions, and he has enjoyed collaborations and extended guest appointments with scientists at educational institutions in Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Italy, New Zealand and Chile. He has also taught short courses on mountain meteorology in Finland, Austria, Croatia, Japan, Canada, Italy, Argentina and New Zealand.
As part of the series, Current Research in the University of Utah College of Science, Dr. Whiteman's Osher class lecture on October 23 will be:
