David Kranes graduated from Bowdoin College, received a master's degree in English from New York University, and a PhD in Fine Arts from Yale University Drama School. He began teaching at the University of Utah in 1967, retiring after 34 years. While at the U he received many teaching awards, including the prestigious University Professor Award. He founded the Sundance Institute's Playwrights Lab and served as its director for 14 years. He is the author of 50 plays, seven novels, and a handful of short story collections.
