LISA ESTERLING

Lisa Esterling has been working in, and learning about, genetics her whole adult life. What started as an interest in high school, became her undergraduate major, ultimately leading to a PhD and work as a postdoctoral fellow. Since then, Lisa has focused on the application of data to associate genes and genetic variants to disease. As part of this focus, she participated in the Human Genome Project mapping susceptibility genes for bipolar disease and schizophrenia. Then, she worked in Informatics and with software developers to support laboratories and genetic discoveries. As the next step, she developed an expanded variant classification program to determine if changes in DNA contribute to cancer development. Lisa has taught numerous classes, from brown bags to undergraduate courses, on the concepts and techniques behind her favorite subject and she is eager to share this knowledge with Osher.
