MARIANNE DOWNING

Marianne Downing is a nonprofit expert with more than 23 years' experience on the international stage, including in New Zealand, Europe and more recently in the United States. She has a particular passion for ensuring the sustainability and professionalism of nonprofit organizations. In her career she has carried out full organizational assessments of Board performance, CEO and staff/volunteer management, organizational management processes and program/service evaluation for more than 140 different nonprofits in the social service and health sectors. Her recommendations have resulted in the set-up of new nonprofits, saved organizations from debt, provided support for increased funding and have streamlined governance and management processes.
At the beginning of her career in nonprofits, Downing was part of an innovative team in New Zealand focused on nonprofit best practice with a set of nationally published standards. Later, she became the National Coordinator of a new program to place social workers administered by nonprofit organizations into public schools.
For almost six years, Downing co-owned a consultancy firm in her native country of New Zealand. She personally authored a manual to manage the relationship between the Ministry of Health, Public Health Directorate and the nonprofit organizations that were funded. She led teams of evaluators to assess significant national programs that were administered via nonprofits such as the Problem Gambling, Immunization Coordination and Smoke-free programs.
