Modern astronomy--central theme will be modern science's attempt to understand the nature and origin of the universe at large, including the matter and radiation that make it up. Specific topics include stars, exotic stellar objects (white dwarfs, red giants, neutron stars and black holes), supernova explosions, the origin of atomic elements, galaxies, giant radio sources, quasars, clusters of galaxies, the fabric of space and time, and Big Bang cosmology.
This noncredit class meets with a regular University of Utah credit course.
Online book and material fees may be added up until the first week of class. Students may opt out during the first two weeks of class. For more information, visit the Campus Store Inclusive Access Program's webpage. If you opt out, you will be responsible for obtaining the course materials yourself for the course.

Learning Assistants (LAs) are attached to this section. LAs are undergraduates who are familiar with course content and trained in small group facilitation. This course includes opportunities for collaborative, active learning, during which students discuss ideas and problem-solve together.
