HIMALAYA—A Virtual Exploration of the World’s Greatest Mountains

An Experience by Jonathan Duncan

This virtual adventure begins in the bustling streets of Kathmandu as we prepare to embark on the classic trek through the Solu Khumbu to the Everest Base Camp. We will visit local shrines, discuss Buddhist art and design, study Eastern mythology, and meet interesting people along the way. The following week will take us into Ladakh, and the arid expanse of the Tibetan Plateau. We will meditate with a reclusive Buddhist monk in a cliffside shrine, and learn about the lifestyle of the villagers in the remote Markha Valley. The next trip takes us to what feels like a world away, as we enter the temperate rainforests of Sikkim. Located in the northeast corner of India, Sikkim has some of the most interesting biodiversity on the planet. We will explore the canopied forests, and track down and interview one of the last nomadic sheep herders of the Himalaya. The final adventure is the two hundred mile trek around Manaslu, the world’s eighth highest mountain. This trek takes us up to 18,000 feet, and we encounter all variety of wildlife and some of the most spectacular mountain scenery on Earth.
