Health Law for Non-Lawyers
Academic Noncredit

Health law for non-lawyers will introduce students to important aspects of the legal structure of the US health care system. Topics covered may include major federal statutes affecting health care (e.g. Medicare, Medicaid, ACA, EMTALA, ADA, GINA and HIPAA) and recent developments concerning these statutes; payment for health care in the US; confidentiality and privacy; tort litigation and malpractice; non-discrimination and the duty to treat; the regulation of drugs and devices; and law and controversial forms of care such as abortion. This course meets with MLS students who wish to complete the concentration in health care law or who are otherwise interested in learning more about the legal aspects of the U.S. health care system.

This noncredit class meets with a regular University of Utah credit course.

Online book and material fees may be added up until the first week of class. Students may opt out during the first two weeks of class.
