Introduction to the Study of Language
Academic Noncredit
The course is an introduction to the nature of human language from modern perspectives in linguistics. Focuses on sounds, words, and sentences through analysis of data from various languages, as well as social factors in language variation and language acquisition by children and adults. Additional topics may include: language change through time, language processing, and the relationship between language and culture.
This noncredit class meets with a regular University of Utah credit course.
Online book and material fees may be added up until the first week of class. Students may opt out during the first two weeks of class. For more information, visit the Campus Store Inclusive Access Program's webpage. If you opt out, you will be responsible for obtaining the course materials yourself for the course.

This course is specifically for students pursuing the noncredit Professional TESOL Certificate. Students participating in this certificate will register for courses with the LINGC subject code. Participants must complete all exams and assignments, and classes are graded on a "satisfactory" or "unsatisfactory" basis. Those not seeking a certificate should register for LING 120.
