Canyoneering III: Self-Rescue

The curriculum in this course mirrors the curriculum in the American Canyoneering Association's (ACA), Self-Rescue portion within their Advanced Canyoneering course. Skills taught include rigging mechanical advantages to haul a stranded rappeller, covert a block rigging system to a lowering system and tandem rappels.

This noncredit class meets with a regular University of Utah credit course.

Students enrolling in this class need to possess the skills learned in Canyoneering II to take this class. Attendance at both class meetings (prior to field program) is mandatory. Drops not possible after 2nd day following the first class meeting. Class meets April 3 & 10 only. Overnight Camping Field Trip, Fri-Sun, April 12 - 14 . This course is the third in a three-part series to prepare students to challenge the American Canyoneering Association's Recreation Canyon Leader and Professional Guide course/exams if desired. Advanced canyoneering skills in 3B canyons will be covered including advanced anchor building, pothole escapes, mechanical advantage, lowering and hauling, as well as issues concerning our federally managed lands as they relate to this course.
