Mountaineering
Academic Noncredit

This class will focus on fundamental mountaineering skills such as steep snow climbing, ice axe technique, footwork, self-arrest, route finding in avalanche terrain, construction of snow anchors, relevant technical rope management skills, and winter camping. Content will be learned and applied over one classroom session and an overnight two-day field experience in a high alpine environment. Leave No Trace skills appropriate for alpine environments and information regarding natural resource management will also be covered in the course.

This noncredit class meets with a regular University of Utah credit course.

Spring 2018 Section 2, Starting on: 02/22/2018

Attendance at first class meeting is mandatory. Drops not possible after the 2nd day following this meeting. Class meets on campus Feb 22nd only. Previous backpacking and winter camping experience is strongly encouraged. Field session overnight March 2-4. Focus on fundamental mountaineering skills such as steep snow climbing, ice axe technique, footwork, anchors, route finding in avalanche terrain, construction of snow anchors, relevant technical rope management skills and winter camping. Leave No Trace skills appropriate for the winter and information regarding natural resource management will also be covered.
