Fundamentals of ski mountaineering such as route finding, rope management, ridge climbing, and advanced ski travel skills. Requires adequate winter camping and backpacking skiing skills. Instruction will include land-management and wilderness ethics. Overnight camping.

This noncredit class meets with a regular University of Utah credit course. Students can purchase any assigned hardcopy textbooks through our Campus Bookstore.

Spring 2026 Section 1, Starting on: 02/25/2026

Begin your ski mountaineering experience by learning fundamentals such as route finding, rope management, ridge climbing, and advanced ski travel skills. You must have adequate winter camping and backpacking skiing skills. Instruction will include land-management and wilderness ethics. Overnight camping. Attendance at the first class meeting on February 25 is mandatory. Drops not possible after the 2nd day following the first class meeting. Field experience is March 6-8. There may be additional expenses that students will need to cover to participate in this course. These items may include food, gear rentals, and transportation costs. More details will be made available during the pre-course meeting
