The curriculum in this course mirrors the curriculum in the American Canyoneering Association's (ACA), Self-Rescue portion within their Advanced Canyoneering course. Skills taught include rigging mechanical advantages to haul a stranded rappeller, covert a block rigging system to a lowering system and tandem rappels.
This noncredit class meets with a regular University of Utah credit course.

This course is the third of a three-part series to teach students advanced canyoneering skills. Skills that will be covered include advanced anchor building and rigging, pothole escapes, guided rappels, potshots, Sand Traps, toggle devices, mechanical advantage, lowering and hauling, canyon leadership and much more. Students enrolling in this course need to possess the skills learned in Canyoneering II to take this class. This course has two pre-trip class meetings. Attendance at both class meetings (prior to field trip) is mandatory. Drops not possible after 2nd day following the first class meeting. Classes meet March 26, and April 2. Overnight Camping Field Trip Fri.-Sun., April 4-6. To determine the last day to drop this miscellaneous course, see https://registrar.utah.edu/handbook/miscellaneous.php . There may be additional expenses that students will need to cover to participate in this course. These items may include food, gear rentals, and transportation costs. More details will be made available during the pre-course meeting.
