Resource management issues, activity skills, safety, consumerism, and environmental ethics associated with rock climbing on lands managed by our federal government. For students who have some experience in rock climbing.

This noncredit class meets with a regular University of Utah credit course.

Online book and material fees may be added up until the first week of class. Students may opt out during the first two weeks of class. Class Sections For Rock Climbing II (PRTL 231)

Fall 2025 Section 2, Starting on: 09/17/2025

This course takes place at City of Rocks in southern Idaho, approximately a 2.5-hour drive from the University of Utah. Renowned for its world-class granite climbing, the City offers top-quality crack and face routes, making it an exceptional destination for learning the fundamentals of rock climbing. Students will learn about leading sport climbing routes, top-anchor construction, hazard awareness, equipment selection and maintenance, and safe climbing practices. Safety practices and risk management will be a core focus throughout the course. Additionally, students will gain an understanding of land management policies and responsible recreation practices to ensure sustainable climbing. Idyllic campsites nestled among aspen groves and granite boulders create a unique and immersive learning environment. The class meets on-campus on September 17th only. Attendance at first class meeting is mandatory. Field experience will be from Sept 26-28. *Drops are not possible after the second day following the first class meeting.* To determine the last day to drop this miscellaneous course, see http://registrar.utah.edu/handbook/miscellaneous.php.
