Backpacking: Desert
Academic Noncredit

Learn the basics of this exciting, low-cost source of adventure. The primary emphasis is to give both the experienced and novice backpacker the knowledge and experience necessary for safe, environmentally sound participation. Common tools, methods, cooking techniques, and resource management issues are also discussed. Course includes two classroom sessions and an overnight weekend field trip to Cedar Range. Special fee includes group equipment and camp permit but not food or transportation.

This noncredit class meets with a regular University of Utah credit course.

Online book and material fees may be added up until the first week of class. Students may opt out during the first two weeks of class. Fall 2024 Section 2, Starting on: 09/18/2024

THIS COURSE IS TAUGHT BY WOMEN AND CREATED FOR A FEMALE PERSPECTIVE. Techniques, backcountry-specific information, equipment planning, and discussions directed and pertaining to women will be a large part of this course. We will be backpacking and overnight camping in Utah’s magnificent red rock desert. Route planning, Leave No Trace techniques, wilderness travel, resource management issues, and environmental ethics associated with backpacking in desert lands are taught. Class meets on-campus on Sept. 18 only. Attendance at the first class meeting is mandatory. Field experience will be from Sept. 27-29. Backpacking and camping in the desert of Southern Utah is an experience not to be missed. You will learn skills required for overnight backpacking including backcountry skills, resource management issues, and environmental ethics associated with backpacking in desert lands. The pre-trip meeting will discuss how and what to pack with a focus on lightening your load. Class meets on-campus on Oct 1 only from 6-9pm. Attendance at first class meeting is mandatory. Field experience will be Oct 11-13. Overnight camping. Attendance at 1st class meeting is mandatory. Drops not possible after the 2nd day following this meeting.
