This noncredit class meets with a regular University of Utah credit course.

Embark on your adventure in Southern Utah as you delve into the art of outdoor rock climbing. This course will cover the basics you need to know: top-rope climbing including anchor construction, belay techniques, climbing movement, equipment selection and maintenance and other safe climbing practices. Expand your knowledge of land management policy and responsible recreation climbing practices. Class meets on-campus Mar. 27 only. Attendance at first class meeting is mandatory. Field experience will be from Apr. 11-13. This course takes place at City of Rocks in southern Idaho, approximately a 2.5-hour drive from the University of Utah. Renowned for its world-class granite climbing, the City offers top-quality crack and face routes, making it an exceptional destination for learning the fundamentals of rock climbing. Students will develop essential climbing skills, with an emphasis on top-rope climbing. Topics covered include anchor construction, belay techniques, climbing movement, rappelling, and equipment selection and maintenance. Safety practices and risk management will be a core focus throughout the course. Additionally, students will gain an understanding of land management policies and responsible recreation practices to ensure sustainable climbing. Idyllic campsites nestled among aspen groves and granite boulders create a unique and immersive learning environment. Whether you are new to climbing or looking to refine your skills, this course provides a comprehensive introduction to the sport in one of North America's premier climbing destinations. The class meets on-campus on September 10th only. Attendance at first class meeting is mandatory.
