Canyoneering I: Technical Canyoneering

1st of a 3-course series. Also prepares for American Canyoneering Association (ACA) Recreational Canyon Leader and Professional Canyon Guide Certifications. Features ACA Technical Canyoneering course curriculum.

This noncredit class meets with a regular University of Utah credit course. Students can purchase any assigned hardcopy textbooks through our Campus Bookstore.

Class Sections For Canyoneering I: Technical Canyoneering (PRTL 263)

Summer 2026 Section 1, Starting on: 05/26/2026

This course is the first in a three-part series to teach students canyoneering skills. Skills that will be covered include the ACA Core Skill standards such as basic knots, intro to anchors and rigging, rappelling, belaying, self-rescue, trip planning, canyon rating system, canyon logistics and safety, partner captures, moving through the canyons, Leave No Trace ethics and much more. This course has two pre-field trip class meetings. Attendance at both class meetings (prior to field trip) is mandatory. Drops not possible after the 2nd day following the first class meeting. Class meets Tuesdays, May 26 and June 2. Overnight Camping. Field experience Fri.-Sun, June 5-7. There may be additional expenses that students will need to cover to participate in this course. These items may include food, gear rentals, and transportation costs.
