Project Management is a continually growing field across many industries. Employers are looking for professionals who have the skills to oversee a project from start to finish in the most effective and efficient way possible. Courses will provide students with greater understanding about the principles of project management, project team management and project assessment. Students will gain skills in project management techniques and methodologies. This full certificate satisfies the PMI 35 contact hours of formal project management education for the PMI PMP® credential or 23 hours for the PMI CAPM® credential.

This certificate program provides participants with essential fundamental project management training. Professionals who are interested in the field of project management, and who may have experience but do not have formal training will learn common methodologies used by project managers today. Students will complete the certificate with a well-rounded set of both hard and soft skills needed to understand project management best practice.

Designed for those who are CAPM® or PMP ® bound, this online certificate course combines foundational project management courses with a PMP® exam prep course for a total educational experience. This certificate will provide students with greater understanding about the principles of project management, project team management and project assessment. All courses are offered in an online format and align with PMI® frameworks. PMI® student membership is included in tuition. Complete both programs and receive a Project Management Essentials Certificate from the University of Utah.

Project Management Fundamentals Certificate Online – PROEA 102

This is an instructor-led online program with a fixed start and end dates as opposed to an on-demand start model. The program is offered once a semester and students must start with the cohort.

Through a series of reading materials, learning activities, videos, and online interactions with other students and your instructors / coaches, you can expect a flexible and engaging experience. Students generally may move through the course at their own pace as long as activities, discussions and assignments are completed by their due dates. You’ll experience the class by using the U of U Canvas (Instructure LMS) portal which is like a class website.

PMP Exam Prep Course - PROEA 644

This live, online course provides Project Managers with the instruction and skills needed to master the Guide to the Project Management Institute® Body of Knowledge (PMBOK Guide) 6th Edition, understand the Project Management Institute's (PMI®) best practices, and attain a Project Management Professional (PMP®) certification. The PMP® credential is the most widely accepted professional certifications on the globe.

Please note: this class provides you with an additional tool in your arsenal of study vehicles. It should augment and not replace other forms of study. The PMP Exam is not included in the certificate price.

Who should take this certificate?

This certificate is designed for a variety of individuals:

    Individuals new to project management.
  • Individuals who have been in project management but want to understand the concepts and popular methodologies of project management.
  • Individuals who are interested in pursuing the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM®) or Project Management Professional (PMP®) certifications and want to brush up on the fundamental skills.

Experience in project coordination or management is encouraged but not required.

  • Sequencing requirements – Student’s may take the above classes in any order they like.
  • Prerequisites – Existing knowledge of Project Management Fundamentals. Please see Project Management Fundamentals
  • Time to complete – Students may take up to 2 years to complete all required courses.

Tuition for individual classes is as follows:

  • PROEA 102: Project Management Fundamentals Certificate Online- $1499
  • PROTA 107: PMP Exam Prep Course Online -$1395
  • Tuition for the full certificate program once completed is $2,894
  • Registration for the certificate requires a $25 fee to cover additional student services and benefits.
  • Tuition is due at the beginning of each course offering a pay-as-you-go option. Tuition listed above is for the 2018-2019 academic year and subject to change without advance notice.

Financial aid is not available for this noncredit certificate. Students are encouraged to inquire with their employers to determine if tuition assistance is available.

#1 - Register for the Certificate

Registration for this certificate, and payment of the $25 nonrefundable fee, signifies the intent to complete all courses associated with this certificate program. Fees cover additional student services provided for our certificate students.

#2 - Register for your Certificate Classes

Once you’ve registered for the certificate and received a confirmation from our team, you may begin to register for individual certificate classes.

  • Certificate students will register themselves for classes.
  • You may take as many classes during a semester as desired.
  • Students have two years to complete all certificate classes.
  • Payment for classes is required at the time of registration.
  • Classes may be taken individually or as part of the certificate.
  • Students may also enroll in the certificate after they’ve begun taking classes but must register as a certificate student to receive their certificate of completion.

Certificate Completion Requirements

  • Students must receive an “S-Satisfactory" grade in all classes for successful completion.
  • individual classes may have projects to complete during the class to earn a satisfactory grade which will be communicated in the class syllabus.

How is my accomplishment recognized?

  • A certificate is awarded upon satisfactory completion of all required courses
  • The completed certificate will appear on University of Utah official transcripts
  • Students will be awarded a University of Utah digital credential (badge)
  • Upon completion of all required classes students then will fill out the Completed Certificate Request Form. Once the form is received confirmation of your completion will be verified, Certificate and digital credential will then be issued to student 10-14 days after form is received.

Are there exams? Am I graded?

There are no exams. Certificate classes are graded with a "satisfactory" or "unsatisfactory" option. For successful certificate completion, students must achieve a "satisfactory" grade in all classes.

Can I apply these classes to a degree at the University of Utah?

This certificate is noncredit and cannot be applied to any for-credit degree.

Is there a minimum or maximum number of classes a student may take in a semester?

There are no minimums or maximum number of class restrictions for students. The certificate must be completed within two years.

Will I have flexibility in what classes I take and when?

Once admitted, students are responsible for enrolling in individual classes on their own through the Professional Education website. Students may consult with the certificate program manager if they have questions about specific courses. (See contact us section)

Are these classes eligible for federal financial aid?

Students pursuing a certificate are considered "non-degree seeking," a status that is not eligible for federal student aid loan programs.

Does it matter which course I take first or in what order I take the classes?

No, you may take courses in any order
