Whether you are generalist, specialist or new to Human Resources, our Foundations of Human Resources Management Certificate provides a general overview of the dynamic and growing field of HR Management.

Build your knowledge of business-employee relationships and organizational behavior though our 8-week online certificate program. This course will cover all of the major areas within a full-functioning Human Resources operation. Students will be able to develop appropriate strategies for implementing solutions to human resources management problems that reflect their knowledge and explaining of the interrelationships among the connecting departments within any professional human resource setting. Students will receive an overview of human resource management that will prepare them for higher level human resource management courses, or qualify them for entry-level human resource positons.



This certificate offers a flexible yet engaging experience where students are able to work at their own pace. Students explore the practices and foundations of human resource management through a series of reading materials, learning activities, videos and online interactions with other students and certificate instructor. Students capstone project includes preparing a portfolio to be submitted and presented at the end of the course.

Who should take this certificate?

This certificate is designed for the following individuals:

  • Individuals wishing to increase eligibility for an entry-level position in human relations management
  • Individuals working in related functional areas who want to gain exposure to principles of human resources management to assist them in adding value and impact in their current role
  • Individuals who want to make a transition into a human resource related position

No prior experience in Human Resources is required.

Duration:   8 weeks.
This is an instructor-led online program with a fixed start and end dates as opposed to an on-demand start model. The program is offered once a semester and students must start with the cohort.

Format:    This is an online, instructor-led, cohort course with 2 in-person classes that will meet in the evening at the Continuing Education main campus offices. One of the in-person classes is a course introduction to meet your instructor and fellow students and the other is an panel discussion with HR professionals. Students from out of the area should contact professional education to find out more about options for the in-person sessions.

Online Course Experience:    Through a series of reading materials, learning activities, videos and online interactions with other students and your instructors, you can expect a flexible and engaging activity. Students generally may move through the course at their own pace as long as activities, discussions and assignments are completed by their due dates. You’ll experience the class by using the U of U Canvas portal which is like a class website. Your instructor will have “office hours” when they are available to answer questions and communicate one on one with students.

Time commitment:    Students should expect to spend 2 to 3 hours a week engaging with this class online. There are also two in-person “networking” classes that will bring the group together to incorporate the best of face-to-face learning.

Location:    This course is online with the exception of the 2 in person segments which will be held at the new Continuing Education building located at 540 Arapeen Drive in Research Park.

Frequency:   This certificate program is currently scheduled to be offered in the spring, fall and summer semesters.

Capstone Project:   Students will prepare a portfolio to be submitted and presented at the end of the course. This portfolio will reflect one of the main focus areas in a real world human resource program or practice.

Grades

All certificate students will receive a satisfactory or unsatisfactory grade at the conclusion of the certificate program. Requirements to achieve a satisfactory grade will be detailed in the class syllabus.

Your participation grade will be based on the following criteria:

  • Preparation – you will be expected to be ready to discuss insights and thoughts regarding assigned reading weekly.
  • Quality – your comments and insights in class reflect knowledge of subject matter, theories, and frameworks and the ability to apply them to real and simulated situations.
  • Participation – you will be expected to contribute to discussions, interact with fellow students and myself, and play a significant role in your groups.
  • Evaluation – written peer reviews of your role in in-class exercises, your portfolio, and class presentation will be done by all students.

Jeanine WilsonJeanine Wilson has worked in the Human Resources field for 25 years. She has worked in hospitality, finance, benefits management, broadcasting, manufacturing, pharmaceutical and medical device industries.

Jeanine is currently owner of Corporate Talent Advisors, a full service HR consulting, training, and recruiting company.

Jeanine has a Bachelor’s Degree in Human & Organizational Development from Westminster College in Salt Lake City, a Masters in Human Resources from Utah State University, and she has achieved an SPHR certification from SHRM and HRCI. Jeanine was the 2005 President of the Salt Lake SHRM Chapter and currently sits on the Utah SHRM State Council.

Program Cost - Noncredit tuition for the full certificate is $1899.

Are there exams? Am I graded?

There are no exams. Certificate classes are graded with a "satisfactory" or "unsatisfactory" option. For successful certificate completion, students must achieve a "satisfactory" grade in all classes.

Can I apply these classes to a degree at the University of Utah?

This certificate is noncredit and cannot be applied to any for-credit degree.
