Hiking and History of Canyonlands National Park
Academic Noncredit

Class will focus on the natural history of Canyonlands National Park whilst day hiking. Attention will be given to contemporary resource management challenges and their relationship to user behaviors. In addition, the course will focus on safety, leave no trace ethics, consumerism, and environmental ethics.

This noncredit class meets with a regular University of Utah credit course. Students can purchase any assigned hardcopy textbooks through our Campus Bookstore.

Class Sections For Hiking and History of Canyonlands National Park (PRTL 252)

Fall 2026 Section 1, Starting on: 10/05/2026

Explore the mesas, buttes, fins, and spires of this vast national park. You will learn about campsite selection, camping equipment, how to prepare for your own camping adventure and safe hiking practices as you hike 3-5 miles per day and camp overnight in Canyonlands National Park. Class meets on-campus on Oct 5 only. Attendance at the first class meeting is mandatory. Field experience will be from Oct. 16-18, during fall break. Overnight camping. *Drops are not possible after the second day following the first class meeting.* To determine the last day to drop this miscellaneous course, see http://registrar.utah.edu/handbook/miscellaneous.php. There may be additional expenses that students will need to cover to participate in this course. These items may include food, gear rentals, and transportation costs. More details will be made available during the pre-course meeting.
