Illustration: Fantasy Maps (Age 14-17)
Youth Education

Young artists who love stories and adventure will enjoy this focused illustration camp. Throughout the week, students will design and complete their own fantasy map, moving step by step from rough sketches to a finished pen and ink illustration. They will practice linework and shading using both felt-tip and ink-dip pens, learn the basics of calligraphy to letter place names and legends, and discover image transferring and compositing techniques that help them layer landforms, borders, and decorative details into a cohesive design. By the end of the week, each student will have created a beautiful and complex work of art that could easily serve as a guide for Davy Jones or Bilbo Baggins.

Learning Objectives:
  • Learn the step by step process of creating illustrated fantasy maps from initial sketches to finished ink work
  • Practice technical drawing skills including linework, shading, calligraphy, and pen handling
  • Develop compositing and image-transferring techniques to combine landforms, borders, and decorative elements into a cohesive map design
