Intro to White Water Kayaking (Age 15-17)

Dive into adventure with our Intro to White Water Kayaking Camp! Designed for teens ready to explore the thrill of moving water, this camp combines hands-on skill building with personal growth and teamwork. Under the guidance of certified instructors, participants will learn kayaking fundamentals including paddle strokes, boat control, river reading, and safety techniques by starting in calm waters before progressing to beginner-level rapids. Along the way, campers will develop confidence, courage, and an appreciation for the power and beauty of rivers. Whether you're brand new to kayaking or looking to strengthen your foundation, this camp offers the perfect balance of challenge and fun in a supportive, safety-first environment. Learning Objectives:
  • Kayak Familiarization: Understanding inflatable kayak setup, inflation, and maintenance.
  • Paddling Techniques: Forward, reverse, and sweep strokes for steering and stability.
  • River Reading: Identifying current, eddies, and obstacles to choose safe, effective lines.
  • Self-Rescue Skills: Exiting the kayak safely, managing a swim, and re-entering the boat.
  • Team Safety: Practicing communication, spacing, and group awareness on moving water.
  • Gear & Safety Management: Proper use of helmets, PFDs, and throw bags.
  • Environmental Stewardship: Learning Leave No Trace principles for river travel.
  • Basic Hydrology & Hazard Awareness: Recognizing river features and understanding safe vs. unsafe conditions.

Class Sections For Intro to White Water Kayaking (Age 15-17) (YESPR 144)

Summer 2026 Section 1, Starting on: 07/06/2026

Bring a packed lunch and wear water shoes that strap securely to the foot (No Crocs, slides, flipflops, etc. Students will not be able to participate if inappropriate shoes are worn for safety reasons) and clothes that can get wet. Reminder emails will be sent out before camp begins and will include location notes and other details.
