The Art and History of Sewing By Hand
Lifelong Learning

Are you looking for a relaxing and affordable hobby that will help you expand your wardrobe? Look no further! Join us to learn the relaxing art of sewing by hand. You don't need a machine -- just you, a threaded needle, and a piece of clothing. You'll start acquiring techniques by mending an old piece from your own wardrobe. Next, you'll learn how to alter clothes, resizing or combining items to create new pieces! As you sew, your instructor (who learned at the feet of her own mother) will share the history of hand sewing in the Black American community, from its roots in slavery to its role in economic independence and cultural expression. You'll walk away from this class with at least two now-wearable items of clothing, a pocketful of new skills, and a brain full of fascinating history.
