Nuclear power is coming to Utah. Be informed of its benefits and risks. This course will discuss nuclear power, where it came from, what it is, where it has been, where it is now, and where it is going. We will examine the basics of nuclear power: the atom and its enormous potential energy, the nuclear power cycle, and radiation contamination. We will talk about nuclear power safety and accidents. We will cover accidents you are aware of, such as Three Mile Island in 1979, Chernobyl in 1986, and Fukushima in 2011.We will also cover nuclear accidents you might not be aware of, such as Idaho Falls in 1955, Detroit in 1966, and others. We will wrap up by looking at the revolution in nuclear safety and the latest nuclear plant designs.
