This course is part of a survey of Western Art, to be covered over numerous terms. It is intended to introduce class members to the visual arts, as they emerged from the earliest creations by humans through those of contemporary artists today. Each course in the survey will provide an historical context for the works examined, along with many major works created during the different time periods. This particular session will cover the arts of Late Antiquity (Romans, Jews and Christians around the time of Constantine), Byzantium (the Roman Empire in the East), and Islam. Selected works of art will be explored for their lasting impact and relevance on today's art.
