Art History: Early Medieval European, Romanesque European, and Gothic Art
Osher Lifelong Learning Institute

This is an ongoing art history course from Gardner's Art through the Ages. This semester we will look at Early Medieval art and architecture, the Carolingian Renaissance of Charlemagne, along with the introduction of the importance of illuminated manuscripts. We will also include the beautiful castles of the Romanesque period and the secular, luxury arts: tapestries, relics, and decorated books. Finally we will consider the Gothic cathedrals like Chartres and Notre Dame with their fabulous architecture, sculptural designs, and their symbolic stained-glass windows. This section will also include an in-depth presentation on Notre Dame's history, the recent fire, and the rebuilding.
