Psychology in the Headlines: The Hidden Forces Behind Current Events
Osher Lifelong Learning Institute

In this course, we move beyond the headlines to examine the social psychological machinery of today's most pressing global issues. By revisiting classic studies--like Milgram's work on authority and Zimbardo's exploration of social roles--we gain a framework for understanding modern dilemmas. We will discuss the psychology of "Us vs. Them" and group identity, including why groups become polarized and, more importantly, what the research says about bridging the divide and fostering cooperation. Please note that this course is not a political debate; it is an examination of human behavior on both a macro and micro level. You will learn how to look at current events through the lens of a social scientist.
