John Mortimer's Rumpole of the Bailey is part barrister, part detective, and part wit, and his combination of high intelligence and low foolery help him and his collection of oddball colleagues create solutions to crimes few others can fathom. Renowned as the comic, courageous, and corpulent "great defender of muddled and sinful humanity," Horace Rumpole, a true Dickensian character, and as great a detective as Sherlock Holmes and Hercule Poirot, shines and generates laughter in one short story after another.
