Mention Rodgers and Hammerstein, and instantly you are humming one of their tunes. Together, they created some of the most influential works of the 20th century, setting the "gold standard" for musical theatre. Yet their legacy is not only as a team, but also individually. Each man left his own mark on the stage, working with other collaborators and pushing the boundaries of the art form. This course will explore Rodgers and Hammerstein both as partners and as individuals: their works, their innovations, and their lasting impact on theatre and culture. We will learn how they reshaped and defined musical theatre in their era, with an influence that continues to this day.
