Around the world, extraordinary species are disappearing - but great science writing helps us see them more clearly and understand why they matter. In this discussion-based course, we will explore endangered animals through essays from Katherine Rundell's Vanishing Treasures: A Bestiary of Extraordinary Endangered Creatures. Each week we will read two short essays and discuss the remarkable biology of these species - from axolotls to snow leopards - alongside the craft of writing that brings them vividly to life. The course begins with an overview of endangered species locally and globally. Participants will then have the option to hone their own science communication skills by helping to facilitate one of our weekly discussions with guidance, notes, and planning support from the instructor. No scientific background is required - only curiosity, thoughtful reading, and a love of the natural world.
