Hippocrates wrote, "Wherever the art of medicine is loved, there is also a love of humanity." Literature is an art that best describes illness, the people who are affected by it, and the people who treat it. We will read and discuss essays, short stories, and poems, written by doctors, patients, and by brilliant authors that may include: Sir William Osler, William Carlos Williams, Mikhail Bulgalov, Jorge Luis Borges, Pablo Neruda, WH Auden, Eudora Welty, May Sarton, Lewis Thomas, Anatole Broyard, Denise Levertov, Richard Selzer, John Stone, Raymond Carver, and Perri Klass.
